Law enforcement in Sacramento are probing a gun violence incident that erupted on the evening of April 18 at the Howe Community Park area while Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispersing an unlawful assembly of hundreds of attendees.
Background
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first called to Howe Community Park just after 6:30 Saturday evening after obtaining information of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Following that, additional information came in describing a potential altercation unfolding at the location.
Aerial units searched from above but found nothing to substantiate the Home Depot Sacramento shooting fight report. Even so, it became clear that several hundred individuals had come together at the location without any permit or approval.
When the Shots Rang Out
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies began the process of clearing the park by surrounding the park and broadcasting over loudspeakers commanding attendees to clear out. Roughly 15 minutes were given for the crowd to leave.
At the height of the dispersal effort that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition were fired. The shots sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Officers quickly moved to searching for victims.
Those Who Were Hit
Altogether, four individuals were found to have been shot. The shooting victims — comprising three men and one woman each apparently in their mid to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Doctors and nurses stated that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one had injuries classified as minor. Fortunately, all four were in stable condition.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department were called to the scene and assisted with medical triage those with gunshot wounds at the scene.
What Investigators Found
The primary shooting scene was confirmed to have happened along the Cottage Way corridor alongside the Home Depot on the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Detectives discovered additional spent rounds on Cottage Way. Bullet holes were noted in the iron perimeter fence bordering the Home Depot store. This evidence indicated that one of the gunmen had been shooting in a southerly direction from along Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot. The store itself was put under lockdown as a precaution. CSI units alongside detectives stayed at the location late into the evening.
Suspects Detained
Information obtained through law enforcement radio communications confirmed that a suspect Kia was contacted by law enforcement in an area within Solano County. Four suspects were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sheriff's units were sent to retrieve the detainees to transport the detainees for formal questioning. Video reviewed at the scene confirmed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
